Women's Golf Apparel
Essential Wardrobe Part I
Women golfers have to look great on the course. It's just part of our nature. Bob Hope said that he couldn’t ever give up golf because it would be a waste of his wardrobe full of sweaters. This implies that sweaters worn for golf can’t be worn elsewhere – this is no longer true as Golf apparel is adaptable to many situations. But you might play somewhere where sweaters would just be ridiculous because of the heat. So what is the right women's golf apparel??
I suggest that first of all that you check out the other players on your particular course. If others are wearing sun tops and shorts and you want to wear them, then that is fine. At many other places the club may prefer you to be a little more covered up – knee length skirts or slacks and tops with at least cap sleeves. I know it really doesn’t matter and it certainly won’t improve your game, but it does matter to abide by the rules of the club or course you are playing at.
As I write this I have before me a 1924 article by Cecil Leitch (known otherwise as Charlotte Leitch, British Women’s Amateur Champion 4 times early in the 20th century). She did this despite being impeded by the long, restrictive skirts of the time as seen in the photograph to the right. She must have had exceptional talent, especially as her home course of Silloth was, and is, subject to howling winds. For we women golfers who are not quite so gifted, we need to choose clothing that allows as much freedom as possible.
Golf Hats, Caps and Visors
Perhaps you never normally wear a hat or cap, but when looking down the fairway you want to be able to see clearly – a shade over you eyes will help considerably, especially on days when the sun is low in the sky. Baseball caps are a popular and inexpensive choice and they have straps to adjust them to any size. Sun visors serve a similar purpose, but don’t protect the top of your head from the sun if you regularly play in one of the world’s sunnier spots.
You might want to consider your hairstyle at this point – French rolls and chignons look fine, but get in the way of such hats. Long loose hair might fly around your face just at the crucial moment, for golf at least a short style or a pony tail is easier. If you are lucky enough to live in the sun – you will want to make sure you have a reliable pair of sunglasses handy – especially if you end up in the sand traps on occasion.
Golf Shoes
You are going to walk quite a distance during the course of a game - specialist women's golf shoes are a necessary expense. There is a huge range out there, from the decidedly clumpy to golf sandals. With women golfers in mind, finally golf sandals and shoes are now being designed to look good both on and off the course. While style may be important, more importantly – they need to look after your legs and feet whether you’re at the driving range or on the course. All of them will have flat bases but you want to make sure that they really will give you the level of support and comfort you need. Don't forget to wear good, cotton, padded socks!
Golf Gloves
Golf gloves come in as varied ranges and styles as golf clubs, however, looking at dozens of pictures of women-golfer champions, none of them is wearing a pair, not even fingerless ones. Yet the golf shops are full of them, mostly proclaiming that they will give you a better, more professional grip. For ladies, golf gloves can be a blessing in disguise as they can protect your hands from too much sun, keep your grip dry and also for women wearing rings or who have long finger nails – they can protect both your hands and your nails. Usually only one glove is worn on your predominant hand (right or left) as this is the main hand that grips the club.
Underneath
It is important that you choose a bra that is comfortable and doesn’t need adjusting all the time. A sports bra will be less restricting than some of your more lacy numbers. You need to think about comfort and if you’re inclined style should be added to the basics of comfort first. Activa has a very good selection of styles to choose from and includes tank bra tops which are an excellent alternative for comfort and support.
In addition, they have a good selection of Sports Bras - D's & Up.
